Winter in Carinthia

Climate and Snow

Thanks to its location between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, the southernmost state of Austria enjoys a mild winter climate with above-average hours of sunshine.
Carinthia is not only spoilt by the sun, but is also snow certain. Excellent snow is provided by some low-pressure area above the Adriatic Sea between sunny days and ultramodern snow facilities, which guarantee excellent groomed slopes from November to the spring – also in addition to the year-round open ski area on the Mölltaler Glacier.
Skiers and snowboarders can find the current, detailed climate & weather forecasts, climate tables and snow depths for all Carinthian ski areas at www.visitcarinthia.at or in the free Kärnten Wetter App.

Alpine ski fun

It’s a matter of the right mix, the unforgettable pleasure of skiing and snowboarding. A cheerful mixture, characterized by high alpino, promising slopes for experts among mighty three thousandets, wide, cosy and safe slopes for families, advanced moguls, half-pipes for acrobats and deep snowy slopes for free riders.
A total of 31 ski areas in Carinthia and East Tyrol with almost 900 kilometres of pistes and around 274 modern ski lifts without long waiting times and with attractive offers guarantee alpine winter fun under the southern sun. The Top Ski Pass Carinthia East Tyrol serves as the door opener, which is valid in all ski areas from one and a half to fourteen days. More on www.topskipass.at

Carinthia also thinks in winter of those who are looking for alternatives to skiing. The mirror-smooth ice skating paradises under the open skies, as well as the largest prepared natural ice fields on the 6.5 square kilometre Weissensee, are legendary. Freedom-loving people dare to ice clamber, take husky snow safaris or go on snowshoes through the snow-covered winter paradise. Or they can visit thermal baths, for example the Carinthian Thermal Baths in Villach or the renovated St. Cathrein Thermal Baths in Bad Kleinkirchheim. All year round bathing and sauna visits directly on the lake are possible in the bathhouses at Lake Millstättersee and Lake Wörthersee.
If you really want to get around, you can take the skiers on the latest Nockberge trail along the ski areas Katschberg, Innerkrems, Turracher Höhe, Falkert and St. Oswald/Bad Kleinkirchheim. The routes are suitable for experienced hikers and pleasure-oriented ski hikers.
Other alternatives to the ski slopes can be found with tobogganing, horse-drawn sleigh rides or romantic winter hikes.

Family holidays

Carinthia stands for a relaxing family holiday on the south side of the Alps. And that for generations. Many parents who today experience the winter south of Austria with their children have taken their first steps in winter sports as children on the Carinthian slopes.
The favourable location guarantees not only snow security and piste safety but also pure winter fun: with many easy family runs, wide slopes, modern ski lifts without long waiting times and of course with the affordable family packages in almost all Carinthian ski areas.
The most important basic rule when the mountain calls: have your equipment checked before every season! Helmet gaiter for children up to the age of 15.
